The man who broke the modern-era barrier for NFL head coaches
In short: In 1989, Art Shell achieved what few thought possible in professional football. By stepping into the head coaching role for the Raiders, he became the first African American head coach in the sport's modern era, ending a long drought that stretched back to 1925.
Art Shell's journey to the helm of the Raiders began far from the bright lights of the NFL. Born in 1946 in South Carolina, Shell grew up in a segregated environment, graduating from Bonds-Wilson High School in 1964. While attending Maryland State College—presently the University of Maryland Eastern Shore—he received 1967 All-America recognition from Ebony magazine and the Pittsburgh Courier. His collegiate success paved the way for his entry into professional football.
Drafted 80th overall in the third round of the 1968 NFL/AFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, Shell established himself as a formidable offensive tackle. Over 15 seasons, he became a cornerstone of the Raiders' line, playing alongside legends like Gene Upshaw and Jim Otto. His durability was remarkable; he played 156 consecutive games before an injury in 1979, followed by another 51 straight games after his recovery.
When Raiders owner Al Davis hired Shell as head coach in 1989, it was a landmark moment for the league. Shell was the first Black head coach in the modern era, the first since Fritz Pollard in 1925. During his first season as coach, he led the team to the AFC championship game, becoming the first African American coach to reach that stage. Though his tenure ended in 1994, his legacy was cemented by his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Shell's influence extended beyond the sidelines. After his coaching stints with the Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Atlanta Falcons, he ascended to the role of NFL Senior Vice President over football operations in 2004, overseeing the league's development and operations.
