From high school captain to NFL offensive coordinator: the rise of Arthur Smith
In short: Before he was orchestrating complex NFL offenses, Arthur Smith was a multi-sport standout in Maryland. Now a prominent coordinator, his journey through the coaching ranks includes stints with the Titans, Falcons, and Steelers, marked by both high-scoring successes and significant media scrutiny.
Arthur Smith's path to professional coaching was paved by a diverse athletic background. While attending Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland, he was a team captain and a versatile player, competing on the offensive line and at defensive tackle. His high school accolades were significant, earning first-team all-state honors at offensive line and being recognized as a first-team All-Metro selection by The Washington Post.
His collegiate career at North Carolina (2001–2005) was interrupted by injury. After playing only one game in 2002 due to a foot problem, Smith underwent surgery in January 2003, causing him to miss the entire 2003 season. Following graduation in 2006, he transitioned into coaching, starting as a graduate assistant at North Carolina before entering the NFL with the Washington Redskins in 2007.
Smith's coaching trajectory saw him rise through the ranks of the Tennessee Titans, where he became offensive coordinator in 2019. Under his direction, the Titans achieved their highest-scoring season in 16 years. This success led to his appointment as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. However, his tenure in Atlanta was marked by criticism regarding player utilization and three consecutive 7–10 seasons, leading to his departure in January 2024.
Currently serving as the offensive coordinator for Ohio State, Smith's recent professional history includes a tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2024–2025). His career is also tied to a significant business legacy; his father, Frederick W. Smith, founded FedEx, while his paternal grandfather founded the Toddle House restaurant chain, which inspired the Waffle House.
