How a group of teenagers stunned African football by playing with pure joy
In short: In 1999, opponents called it a scandal to play against children. Yet, a squad of 17-year-olds from Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas ignored the critics, defeated the seasoned giants of Espérance Sportive de Tunis, and claimed the CAF Super Cup.
The triumph of ASEC M/Mimosas was not an accident of talent, but the result of a deliberate, revolutionary philosophy. Founded in 1948 by a diverse group of businessmen from France, Lebanon, and West Africa, the club eventually moved toward a model of radical youth development. Under the direction of Jean-Marc Guillou and president Roger Ouégnin, the Académie MimoSifcom was established in 1993 at the club's Sol Béni training complex.
The academy's approach was holistic, providing student-athletes with rigorous education in subjects ranging from physics and math to English and Spanish, alongside two daily training sessions. This focus on development turned the club into a global talent factory, producing international stars like Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré, and Gervinho. The academy's success was so profound that when Guillou moved to the Belgian side K.S.K. Beveren in 2001, the team became largely composed of Ivorian academy graduates.
While the club has enjoyed immense domestic dominance—winning the Ivorian Premier Division 29 times, including a record seven consecutive titles between 2000 and 2006—its greatest continental achievements came through this youth movement. Beyond the 1998 CAF Champions League victory, the 1999 Super Cup win proved that the 'children' could compete with the continent's elite. This legacy of excellence remains anchored in the club's original philosophy, established by coach Guy Fabre in 1954: 'may the children have fun... by playing football.'
