From a four-star recruit to the NFL's defensive spotlight
In short: Before he was a mainstay in the NFL, Asante Samuel Jr. was a rising star at Florida State. His journey from a highly-rated high school prospect to a professional cornerback is marked by remarkable defensive statistics and a resilient spirit forged through personal family challenges.
Born on October 3, 1999, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Asante Samuel Jr. entered the world as the son of former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel. His path to professional football was shaped by both athletic talent and personal resilience. During his teenage years, his family faced significant hardship when his mother, Candice Doe, was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 14, though she eventually recovered following surgery.
Samuel's ascent through the ranks of football was steady. A four-star recruit from St. Thomas Aquinas high school, he committed to the Florida State Seminoles. His collegiate career saw significant growth; by his sophomore year in 2019, he earned third-team All-ACC honors after accumulating 48 tackles and 14 pass breakups. He followed this with a first-team All-ACC selection during his 2020 junior season.
The 2021 NFL Draft marked his entry into the professional league, where the Los Angeles Chargers selected him in the second round as the 47th overall pick. He signed a contract exceeding $7 million in May 2021. His rookie season was immediately impactful, earning him Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors for two consecutive weeks. He started 12 games that year, recording 43 tackles and two interceptions.
Following his tenure with the Chargers, Samuel's career has seen various transitions. After a period on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury in late 2024, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad in November 2025. He eventually returned to the active roster, notably recording an interception against the Miami Dolphins in December 2025. By March 2026, he solidified his future with the Steelers, signing a one-year, $4 million contract.
