How a Congolese Boy Scout troop became a global football powerhouse in Lubumbashi
In short: Founded by Benedictine monks for a local school, TP Mazembe evolved from a modest youth team into a continental titan. Today, this Lubumbashi-based club stands as the most successful in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, having shattered international barriers to become the first African side to reach a world final.
The origins of Tout Puissant Mazembe date back to 1939, when missionaries at the Institut Saint-Boniface in Élisabethville—now Lubumbashi—established a football team for their Boy Scout troop. Originally named Saint Georges FC, the club competed in the first division of a league organized by the Belgian King. By 1944, the team was renamed Saint Paul F.C. before eventually adopting the name F.C. Englebert, reflecting a sponsorship deal with a tire manufacturer. The moniker Tout Puissant, meaning Almighty, was earned in 1966 after the club completed an undefeated league season.
The club's rise to international prominence began in the late 1960s. They achieved a historic treble in 1966 and secured consecutive African Cup of Champions titles in 1967 and 1968. Mazembe holds the distinction of being the first club to successfully retain the African Champions Cup, a feat that remained unmatched until Enyimba repeated it decades later. Following a period of absence, the club returned to the continental stage under the leadership of owner Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, winning the CAF Champions League in 2009 and 2010.
Mazembe’s influence extends beyond African borders. In 2010, they made history as the first team from outside Europe or South America to contest the FIFA Club World Cup final, where they ultimately finished as runners-up to Inter Milan. With a total of 39 national and international titles since 1966, the club remains a dominant force in Congolese sports. In 2020, the organization further expanded its footprint by establishing a women's football section, continuing a legacy that began with a small group of scouts in Katanga Province.
