How a local talent rose from Crewe Alexandra to MLS captaincy
In short: From the academy at Crewe Alexandra to leading Charlotte FC, Ashley Westwood's journey is a masterclass in tactical consistency. Known for his ability to keep play simple and stay out of the limelight, this defensive midfielder has navigated the highs of the Premier League and the physical toll of professional football.
Born in Nantwich, Cheshire, on 1 April 1990, Westwood began his professional journey at Crewe Alexandra. After signing his first contract in April 2008, he spent time on loan at his hometown club, Nantwich Town, to gain experience in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. His early impact was immediate; during his second season on loan, he appeared 38 times and scored six goals, earning him the club's player of the season award.
Westwood's tactical profile is that of a deep-lying playmaker, though he possesses the versatility to play higher in midfield or even as a right back. Upon joining Aston Villa in the summer of 2012 for a fee estimated at £2 million, he compared his style to Michael Carrick, emphasizing a preference for retaining the ball and laying it off to teammates rather than seeking the spotlight. During his tenure at Villa, he scored crucial goals, including a strike against Hull City in May 2014 that helped the club avoid relegation.
After a successful stint at Burnley, where he was voted the 2018–19 Player of the Season by both supporters and players, Westwood transitioned to Major League Soccer. In January 2023, he signed with Charlotte FC, where he currently serves as club captain. His career has been marked by both significant achievements and setbacks, such as a serious ankle injury sustained in April 2022 during a match against West Ham United.
