A massive Anglo-Saxon burial site discovered during UK railway construction
In short: Archaeologists working on the HS2 rail project in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, have unearthed a significant Anglo-Saxon burial ground. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into a period of history often obscured by gaps in the archaeological record.
The site, located in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, contains 138 graves, including 141 inhumation burials and 5 cremation burials. These findings represent one of the largest Anglo-Saxon burial grounds ever discovered in Britain. The items recovered are dated to the 5th and 6th centuries, a timeframe that remains historically elusive.
Nearly 75% of the graves contained high-quality grave goods, indicating that the site served a wealthy community. These artifacts are expected to provide substantial new insights into the daily lives, culture, and social structures of Anglo-Saxon Britain.
