Does this ancient Northumbrian burial site hold the lost remains of royal ancestors?
In short: Archaeologists have unearthed a significant Anglo-Saxon cemetery near Bamburgh Castle. This site, known as the Bowl Hole, may contain the remains of the royal court of Bebbanburg, the historic stronghold that preceded the current fortress.
Excavations at the Bowl Hole site have revealed 91 individual skeletons, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of those associated with the Northumbrian royal palace. Dr. Graeme Young, Director of the Bamburgh Research Project, joins medieval expert Matt Lewis to discuss the findings.
The discovery highlights the historical importance of the location, which has served as a strategic stronghold for centuries. By examining these remains, researchers are uncovering stories of the Anglo-Saxon elite that were hidden for generations beneath the dunes.
