From Retribution to Atreyu: how a fantasy novel inspired metalcore's evolution
In short: Before they were a mainstay of the metalcore scene, this California band was known as Retribution. A shift in membership and musical direction led them to adopt a name from Michael Ende's fantasy classic, The Neverending Story, marking the start of a decades-long sonic journey.
Formed in 1998 in Yorba Linda, California, the band originally operated under the name Retribution. The transition to Atreyu was driven by both a change in personnel and a developing musical style. The early days were defined by independent releases, such as the seven-track EP Visions, which the band sold directly at live shows. This era also saw the integration of Brandon Saller, who joined the lineup after being invited by his brother, Ryan S/Saller, to take over drumming duties.
The band's commercial trajectory saw significant peaks during their tenure with Victory Records. Their 2004 album, The Curse, became a major success, selling 450,000 copies and earning them placements on film soundtracks like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. By 2006, the release of A Death-Grip on Yesterday reached number 9 on the Billboard 200, supported by the single 'Ex's and Oh's' appearing on the Madden NFL 07 soundtrack. This period was characterized by a distinct balance between Varkatzas's aggressive screaming and Saller's melodic vocals.
The band's history is marked by notable shifts in vocal dynamics and lineup changes. After a period of hiatus starting in 2011, the band officially reunited in 2014. A significant turning point occurred in September 2020, when the band announced they were parting ways with longtime vocalist Alex Varkatzas. This led to a new configuration where bassist Marc "Porter" McKnight took over screaming duties, allowing Brandon Saller to focus exclusively on clean vocals. This evolution continues through their recent works, including the 2023 album The Beautiful Dark of Life.
Musically, the group defies easy categorization, blending elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, and gothic rock. Guitarist Dan Jacobs cites the influence of 1980s rock and the Gothenburg metal scene, while bassist McKnight points to the motivational impact of bands like Green Day.
