The day the walls fell: revisiting the second season of Attack on Titan
In short: In the spring of 2017, the battle for humanity intensified. As a horde of Titans breached Wall Rose, the Survey Corps faced more than just monsters; they faced the terrifying possibility of betrayal from within their own ranks.
Produced by Wit Studio, the second season of the Attack on An anime television series aired between April 1 and June 17, 2017. Directed by Masashi Koizuka and chief directed by Tetsurō Araki, the season adapted the 'Clash of the Titans' arc from Hajime Isayama’s original manga, specifically covering chapters 35 through 51. The narrative follows Eren Jaeger and his comrades from the 104th Training Corps as they transition into full members of the Survey Corps, thrust into a desperate struggle to defend Wall Rose.
The season is noted for its high-stakes tension, as the characters uncover dark secrets regarding the invading Titans and the identities of their own fellow soldiers. This period of the story moves beyond simple survival, introducing complex layers of internal conflict and the discovery of hidden truths within the military structure.
The auditory landscape of the season was equally impactful, featuring a score by Hiroyuki Sawano. The soundtrack, released as a 2-CD set by Pony Canyon on June 7, 2017, integrated new compositions alongside tracks from intermediate media, such as OVAs and compilation films. The season's identity was further defined by its iconic themes: the opening song 'Opfert eure Herzen!' by Linked Horizon and the ending theme 'Yūgure no Tori' by Shinsei Kamattechan. Vocal contributions to the project included artists such as Yosh from Survive Said the Prophet, Gemie, and Mika Kobayashi.
