In short: When the final season of Attack on Titan arrived, it brought more than just a devastating war. A complete change in production studios and creative leadership fundamentally reshaped the visual and narrative landscape of Hajime Isayama's legendary saga.

The transition to 'The Final Season' was marked by a significant shift in production. MAPPA took over the animation duties, replacing the previous studio. This change brought a new creative core: directors Yuichiro Hayashi and Jun Shunesido led the project, while scriptwriter Hiroshi Seko assumed control of the series composition from Yasuko Kobayashi. Character designer Tomohiro Kishi also stepped in to replace Kyōji Asano.

Narratively, the season moves away from the initial struggle for survival to a complex geopolitical conflict. It covers the 'Marley' and 'War for Paradis' arcs, spanning chapters 91 through 139 of the original manga. The story introduces new perspectives through characters like Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, young Eldian Warrior candidates attempting to inherit the Armored Titan four years after a failed mission to reclaim the Founding Titan.

The scale of the conflict reaches a global crescendo with the 'Rumbling,' an event where Eren Jaeger unleashes millions of Colossal-like Wall Titans to target life outside Paradis. This preemptive strike, driven by global anti-Eldian sentiment and Marleyan propaganda, forces an unlikely Alliance of Survey Corps and Warrior Unit members to attempt to stop him.

The broadcast itself was a multi-year event. Part 1 aired between December 2020 and March 2021, followed by Part 2 in early 2022. The conclusion arrived via two television specials, 'The Final Chapters,' which premiered in March and November 2023, respectively. The musical landscape was equally transformative, featuring themes by artists such as SiM and Linked Horizon, with a soundtrack released in three parts between 2021 and 2023.
