The blockbuster that defied a massive pre-release leak
In short: In 2013, a 90-minute leak of the Telugu film Attarintiki Daredi threatened to derail its commercial success. Instead, the movie shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film of its era. It serves as a masterclass in how narrative momentum can overcome a digital catastrophe.
Attarintiki Daredi, directed by Trivikram Srinivas, follows Gautham Nanda, a business heir who assumes the identity of a driver named Siddhartha. His mission is to reconcile his estranged aunt, Sunanda, with his grandfather, Raghunandan, who disowned her years ago for marrying against his wishes. The plot is layered with complex family dynamics, including a past tragedy where Raghunandan accidentally killed Gautham's mother while attempting to take his own life.
The production was a logistical feat, involving locations in Hyderabad, Pollachi, and Europe. Notably, the film utilized a Milo robotic camera brought from Mumbai because it was unavailable in Hyderabad. A special set at Ramoji Film City cost ₹3 crore, while a high-octane introduction sequence filmed on a Spanish island using helicopters cost approximately ₹2 crore. The film's music, composed by Devi Sri Prasad, even involved location scouting in Barcelona.
Despite a significant leak of 90 minutes of footage on September 22, 2013, the film premiered on September 27 and became a massive success. It surpassed the 2009 hit Magadheera, earning over ₹131 crore at the box office and a distributor's share of ₹74.88 crore. It held the title of highest-grossing Telugu film until the release of Baahubali: The Beginning in 2015. The film's success was bolstered by a diverse cast, including Boman Irani's Telugu debut and a cameo by Mumtaj.
The film's legacy is cemented by its widespread reach, leading to remakes in Kannada (Ranna), Bengali (Abhiman), and Tamil (Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven). It also garnered significant critical and industry acclaim, winning five Nandi Awards and four Filmfare Awards South, proving that a strong narrative and high production values can withstand even the most disruptive piracy.
