From underground heavy metal to topping the global charts
In short: Avenged Sevenfold's rise is a study in persistence. It took the band nearly a decade to achieve their first Billboard 200 top spot, navigating lineup changes and personal tragedy to transform from a regional California act into a global heavy metal powerhouse.
The band's trajectory is marked by a steady climb in commercial visibility. Their 2003 release, Waking the Fallen, failed to chart entirely upon its initial release. It wasn't until 2005's City of Evil that they broke into the Billboard 200, reaching number 30 and eventually earning a Platinum certification from the RIAA in 2009.
A pivotal turning point occurred in 2007 with their self-titled fourth album. This release marked their first top-five peak on the Billboard 200, reaching number 4. However, the band faced a profound tragedy in late 2009 with the death of drummer The Rev. His passing occurred while the group was in the middle of producing their next project, Nightmare.
The band achieved their first Billboard 200 top spot with 2010s Nightmare, featuring guest drummer Mike Portnoy. They continued this momentum in 2013 with Hail to the King, which topped the Billboard 200 and became their first number-one album in both Canada and the UK. The group's eighth studio work, Life Is But a Dream..., hit a peak of 13 on the US charts following its 2023 debut.
The discography also highlights the band's ability to revitalize older work. In 2014, Waking the Fallen: Resurrected (re-released) climbed to 10 in the US, a decade plus one years post-originality, later gaining Platinum status in 2021. This reflects a career defined by both new milestones and the enduring legacy of their early catalog.
