How a single gift of football kits birthed a Brazilian football dynasty

The origins of Avaí Futebol Clube are rooted in a spontaneous victory. After a group of young players defeated a team called Humaitá while wearing kits provided by businessman Amadeub Horn, the club was formally established on 1 September 1923. Meeting at Horn's residence, the founders originally named the club Avahy Football Club, drawing inspiration from the Battle of Avay fought during the Paraguayan War.
Since its inception, the club has established a dominant presence in the state of Santa Catarina. While they were the first champions of the state in 1924, their true legacy lies in their record-breaking consistency. Avaí holds the record for the most state championship titles with 19, surpassing their rivals, Figueirense. This includes a particularly dominant period in the 20th century, during which they secured 13 titles.
The club's journey through the Brazilian football pyramid has seen significant highs and lows. They have competed in the top-flight Série A on eleven different occasions, including notable runs in 1974, 2009, and 2022. Their most successful national campaign came in 1998, when they secured the Série C title. Known as 'The Lion of the Island' due to the geography of Florianópolis, the club continues to play at the Estádio Aderbal Ramos da Silva, famously known as Ressacada.
The stadium itself tells a story of growth. While the current venue was inaugurated in 1983, the club's history includes the now-demolished Estádio Adolfo Konder. The Ressacada has a standard capacity of 17,800, yet it has witnessed much larger crowds, such as the 32,000 spectators who attended the 1988 State Championship final.
