How a fictional metal band from a media franchise became a real-world musical force
In short: Ave Mujica blurs the line between digital storytelling and live performance. Born from the BanG Dream! franchise, this five-piece group portrays fictional high-school students while performing their own symphonic metal music. By blending elaborate stage personas with genuine instrumental skill, they have transcended their anime origins to captivate real-world audiences.
The project emerged in 2023 as a sophisticated multimedia endeavor. Initially teased through an alternate reality game and a mysterious wooden box exhibit, the band debuted with the digital single Black Birthday in April 2023. Their members—Kanon Takao, Yuzuki Watase, Rico Sasaki, Mei Okada, and Akane Yonezawa—adopt specific stage personas named after lunar maria, such as Oblivionis and Mortis. These identities were initially protected by cloaks and dim lighting, only being fully unveiled during the finale of the anime series BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!.
Musically, the group is defined by a symphonic metal sound that incorporates elements of gothic rock, metalcore, and pop. This aesthetic is intentionally crafted to mirror the narrative of their fictional counterparts, particularly the character Sakiko Togawa, who is portrayed as a classical composer. Unlike many other acts in the BanG Dream! franchise that collaborate with Elements Garden, Ave Mujica frequently utilizes lyrics written by Diggy-MO', a former member of the hip-hop group Soul'd Out. This creative choice contributes to their distinct, majestic atmosphere, which aims to provide listeners with an intoxicating escape from reality.
The band's trajectory has been rapid. By April 2025, they had released 20 original songs and their first studio album, Completeness. Their reach extends beyond Japan, with performances at international festivals like Bilibili Macro Link in Shanghai and events in Manila. Their influence was recognized when Rolling Stone Japan named them one of 25 acts representing the future of Japanese music in 2024. Whether through their dedicated anime series or their extensive touring schedule, Ave Mujica continues to challenge the boundaries between character-driven performance and professional musicianship.
