From baseball prospect to NFL champion: the resilient journey of Avonte Maddox
In short: Before he was a professional football standout, Avonte Maddox was a baseball player on the verge of the MLB. His path to the NFL was not paved with scholarship offers, but with a remarkable ability to overcome injuries and rebuild his career.
Avonte Maddox's ascent to the NFL was far from certain. During his high school years, he prioritized baseball, nearly securing a professional contract in the MLB before eventually pivoting back to football. Only two Power Five programs, Purdue and the University of Pittsburgh, extended him scholarships during his college recruitment.
At Pitt, Maddox established himself as a defensive mainstay, starting at cornerback for all four years. His performance earned him accolades including an Honorable Mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference nod during his sophomore season and a Second-team selection as a senior. Injuries often hindered his development, causing him to sit out two matches throughout his junior and senior seasons.
Since the Philadelphia Eagles picked him 125th overall in the 2018 fourth round, Maddox's time in the pros has featured major triumphs alongside tough physical struggles. He has navigated a series of injuries, including a frightening helmet collision in 2019 that required him to be carted off the field, a season-ending knee injury in 2020, and various hamstring, toe, and pectoral issues.
Despite these hurdles, Maddox achieved the pinnacle of the sport. He reached Super Bowl LVII with the Eagles and later secured a championship victory in Super Bowl LIX, where the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22. Following his release from Philadelphia in March 2024, he eventually returned to his hometown, signing with the Detroit Lions in March 2025.
