In short: In 2014, a devastating ACL injury threatened to derail the career of one of high school football's most elite prospects. Yet, the journey from a torn ligament to a Super Bowl victory and a massive NFL contract is a masterclass in professional perseverance.

Josh Brandon Sweat’s ascent began with immense promise at Oscar F. Smith High School in Virginia. By his senior year, ESPN ranked him as the nation's top prospect. However, a torn ACL during his third high school game forced him to undergo reconstructive surgery by New York Giants physician Russell Warren. While the injury caused his ESPN ranking to drop to No. 11 for the class of 2015, he maintained his prestigious five-star status and eventually committed to Florida State.

At Florida State, Sweat transitioned from a highly touted recruit to a consistent defensive force. His collegiate career saw steady statistical growth, including 56 tackles and 5.5 sacks during his junior year in 2017. Following his 2018 NFL Draft declaration, the Philadelphia Eagles picked him during the fourth round, 130th overall. The Eagles made this pick as part of a broader squad overhaul triggered by trading Sam Bradford to Minnesota.

The path to the pros was not without further setbacks. Sweat faced various injuries, including an ankle injury in late 2018 and a wrist injury in 2020. Despite being a rotational player behind teammates like Derek Barnett and Vinny Curry, a 2021 injury to Brandon Graham opened a door for Sweat to become a primary starter. This opportunity led to a breakout season, a Pro Bowl selection, and eventually a Super Bowl LVII appearance with the Eagles.

During 2024, Sweat's performance peaked as he achieved eight sacks, aiding the Eagles' 40–22 retaliatory win against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. His impact was recognized by his peers, who ranked him 95th in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2025. A major four-year, $76.4 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals was signed by him in March 2025, a season in which he promptly achieved a personal best of 12 sacks.
