In short: Nearly twenty years after the original cult classic, Emraan Hashmi returns to the gritty world of Awarapan. This 2026 sequel follows a former gangster on a desperate mission through Bangkok to rescue a missing child, proving that some cinematic legacies are too heavy to stay buried.

Released on 14 August 2026, Awarapan 2 serves as a direct continuation of the 2007 film. The story follows Shivam Pandit, a former gangster who survived a fatal encounter two decades prior. His life, defined by the memory of his deceased lover Aaliyah, takes a sharp turn when he discovers an abandoned baby girl and names her after his lost love. When the child is adopted by a couple involved in trafficking and subsequently goes missing, Shivam joins Interpol to track her down. The investigation eventually leads him to confront the criminal empire of Amrit Singh. He must navigate a dangerous landscape where the mafia's expansion into human trafficking is overseen by Amrit's son, Zorawar.

The production was a massive undertaking, filmed across Bangkok, Rajasthan, Malaysia, and Mumbai between September 2025 and June 2026. The journey was not without physical cost; during an action sequence in Rajasthan, Emraan Hashmi suffered an abdominal injury that required surgery. Despite the production team's efforts, leaked set photos of the leads went viral online during the shoot. The film's cast features Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, alongside the debut of Aniruddh Rawal. The musical score was composed by Raju Singh, featuring a soundtrack with eight different songs.

While critics were divided, the film was a significant commercial powerhouse. It grossed over ₹207 crore (US$22 million) worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026. Reviews were a mix of praise for Hashmi's 'brooding, wounded masculinity' and criticism regarding the script's predictability. Some critics noted that while the production values had modernized, the film struggled to capture the specific 'soul' of the original, even as it successfully recreated the 2000s Bollywood atmosphere. The film's release was originally intended for early April 2026 but was moved to coincide with the Indian Independence Day weekend. It eventually achieved a massive domestic success, entering the 100 Crore Club by mid-August.
