From fashion illustrator to award-winning actor: the multifaceted life of Barry Otto
In short: Before he was a staple of Australian cinema, Barry Otto was a commercial artist and fashion illustrator. A chance discovery of his painting talent by a landlord launched a career that would span decades of film, television, and theatre, leading to some of the industry's most prestigious honours.
Born in Brisbane in 1941, Otto's path to the arts was set in motion at age 17. His landlord, May Stephens, discovered him recreating a Norman Lindsay watercolour, an event that led her to fund his studies at Brisbane Central Technical College. This early mentorship, which included introductions to the opera and theatre, provided the foundation for a career that began in the 1960s as a fashion illustrator for retailers like Myer and McWhirters.
While Otto never underwent formal actor training, his presence on screen became iconic. For his part in the 1985 film Bliss, he won a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award, and his work in Baz Luhrmann's 1992 premiere, Strictly Ballroom, secured two Best Supporting Actor prizes from both the Australian Film Institute and the Film Critics Circle of Australia. His filmography extends to major productions such as The Great Gatsby (2013) and The Dressmaker (2015), often appearing alongside luminaries like Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett.
Beyond the screen, Otto is an accomplished painter who has twice entered the Archibald Prize. His personal life has been marked by both significant professional partnerships and personal challenges. He met his second wife, Susan Hill—a co-founder of Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre—at a Brisbane theatre box office, a union that saw him move to Sydney in the mid-1970s. In more recent years, following a hip replacement, Otto was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2018.
