In short: Before he was a celebrated face on screens like Black Mirror and Top Boy, Ashley Thomas was navigating the streets of London as a bus driver. His journey from the emerging grime scene to the heights of international acting and music is a masterclass in reinvention.

Born in Hammersmith in 1985 to a mother of Jamaican heritage and a father of Dominican heritage, Ashley Thomas—known professionally as Bashy—has navigated a diverse career path. His early years were marked by significant transitions, including being expelled from school and living with his grandmother in Dominica before returning to London at age eight. He attended Cardinal Hinsley High School, where he demonstrated talent in drama. Before moving to Kensal Rise, he studied at St. Mary's of the Angels RC Primary School.

Thomas first gained recognition in the UK's grime scene through pirate radio. In 2007, he released 'Black Boys,' a track intended to provide positive role models for inner-city youth amidst heavy media focus on crime. His musical momentum grew with his 2009 debut album, Catch Me If You Can, which earned a MOBO Award nomination for Album of the Year. He also studied theatre at the BRIT School for Performing Arts.

His versatility is evidenced by his seamless shift between genres and mediums. In 2010, he collaborated with Gorillaz on the track 'White Flag' and began a prolific acting career with roles in films like Shank. He later transitioned to television, appearing in the Emmy-winning Black Mirror and the Netflix revival of Top Boy. His filmography includes the independent action movie Shank and the Sundance-winning My Brother the Devil.

After stepping away from music in 2013 to focus on acting, Thomas made a significant return to his musical roots. On 12 July 2024, he released Being Poor is Expensive, an album that garnered critical acclaim and secured the 2025 MOBO Award for Album of the Year, alongside the award for Best Hip Hop Act. His track How Black Men Lose Their Smile earned an Ivor Novello nomination.
