In short: In 2006, Barry Zito signed the largest contract ever for an MLB pitcher. While many critics expected a decline, the former Cy Young winner proved that even after a massive payday, greatness can still find its way back to the championship stage.

Barry Zito’s career is a study in extreme peaks and valleys. His absolute zenith arrived in 2002 with the Oakland Athletics. That season, he achieved a dominant 23–5 record, leading the American League in wins and securing the Cy Young Award. He famously outlasted a legendary performance from Pedro Martínez, who led the league in ERA and strikeouts but failed to win the award.

However, the financial scale of his career trajectory was unprecedented. In December 2006, Zito transitioned to the San Francisco Giants on a seven-year, $126 million contract. At the time, this was the largest contract ever signed by a Major League Baseball pitcher. For several years, the narrative shifted toward underperformance, as he posted a 63–80 record with a 4.62 ERA during his Giants tenure, including a league-leading 17 losses in 2008.

Yet, Zito’s story is not merely one of statistical decline, but of resilience. Despite struggling with injuries, such as a foot and ankle issue in 2011, he found a second wind in 2012. He posted a 15–8 record and played a pivotal role in the Giants' World Series title. He played a crucial role during the playoffs, beating Justin Verlander during World Series Game One and securing a victory in NLCS Game Five against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Beyond the diamond, Zito’s legacy includes a commitment to service. He founded Strikeouts for Troops, a national non-profit dedicated to supporting military families and providing comforts to injured troops.
