Was this forgotten English barrister the true architect of colonial America?
In short: Bartholomew Gosnold, a Cambridge-educated lawyer, was the prime mover behind the Virginia Company and the founding of Jamestown. Though he led the first English expedition to Cape Cod in 1602, his pivotal role in shaping the New World is often overshadowed by the later, more famous arrivals.
Born in 1571, Bartholomew Gosnold was a barrister and privateer who became a central figure in English colonization. His strategic marriage to Mary Goldinge connected him to the wealthy merchant class of London, including Thomas Smith, a founder of the Virginia Company. By the late 1590s, Gosnold was a vocal proponent of New World settlement, influenced by Edward Hayes’s treatise, which argued that northern regions like New England offered a climate and agricultural potential better suited to English settlers than the southern latitudes.
In 1602, Gosnold captained the Concord, pioneering a direct route from the Azores to New England. He arrived at Cape Elizabeth in May and later named Cape Cod for its abundant fish. On Cuttyhunk Island, his crew attempted to establish a small outpost, but the project collapsed within weeks due to strained relations with local Natives and fears of insufficient winter provisions. Despite this failure, Gosnold remained undeterred, eventually securing an exclusive charter from King James I for the Virginia Company.
Gosnold served as vice-admiral of the 1607 expedition to Jamestown, commanding the Godspeed. He was a vocal critic of the chosen site, correctly identifying it as unhealthy, yet he helped design the fort that protected the initial settlers. He died in August 1607, just four months after landing. In 2003, archaeologists at Jamestown discovered a grave believed to be his, though subsequent attempts to confirm the identity through DNA analysis of his sister’s remains proved inconclusive, leaving his final resting place a subject of ongoing historical investigation.
