In short: Founded in 1889, Bath City F.C. has survived financial ruin, ground-sharing disputes, and near-extinction. From winning the Football League North during World War II to becoming a community-owned club, the "Romans" have navigated over a century of footballing highs and lows.

The club's early history was marked by instability. Originally formed as Bath AFC on 19 July 1889 at the Christopher hotel, the club faced heavy financial struggles by 1891. This forced an amalgamation with the local rugby club, Bath Football Club, resulting in a nine-year hiatus from play. It was not until 11 September 1900, under the leadership of cricketer William Hyman, that Bath AFC was re-formed as Bath City FC.

The club's most successful eras were punctuated by narrow misses in the race for professional status. During the Second World War, Bath City achieved a significant feat by winning the Football League North. Despite this, the FA refused entry to non-League clubs in 1944. The club came close to joining the Football League via election in both 1978 and 1985. In the 1977–78 season, they secured their second Southern League title, a top non-League division at the time.

Twerton Park has served as the club's home since 1932. The stadium has seen massive crowds, including a record 18,020 spectators in 1960 for an FA Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion. While the ground's capacity was once as high as 20,000, safety regulations have since reduced it to 4,070. After years of fluctuating attendances, the club successfully transitioned to community ownership on 5 May 2017, following a campaign supported by figures like Eric Cantona.
