In short: When the final whistle blew in Paris, Diana Taurasi achieved something nearly impossible. By securing gold in the women's basketball tournament, she joined an elite group of athletes who have mastered their sport across six different Olympic Games.

The 202ly women's basketball tournament at the Paris Summer Olympics concluded on 11 August 2024, marking the 21st edition of the event. The competition began on 28 July, with preliminary matches held at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille. The tournament's final stages moved to the Accor Arena in Paris, though the venue was known as Bercy Arena during the games because IOC regulations prohibit host venues from being named after non-IOC sponsors.

The United States emerged as the champions, defeating France in the gold medal match. Australia secured the bronze medal after a victory over Belgium. This victory was particularly significant for American player Diana Taurasi. With this win, she became the only basketball player to ever win six Olympic gold medals, placing her alongside dressage rider Isabell Werth of Germany and sabre fencer Aladar Gerevich as the only Olympians to reach that specific milestone in their respective disciplines.

The tournament structure was a complex web of rankings and draws. Twelve teams were divided into three groups of four, following a seeding process announced on 15 March 2024. Teams were organized into four pots—D, E, F, and G—based on their performance in the group phase. The quarterfinals were determined by a draw that paired top-ranked teams from Pot D against those in Pot G, while teams in Pot E faced those in Pot F. To ensure variety, teams from the same group were prevented from facing one another in the quarterfinals.
