In short: In professional wrestling, the battle royal is a chaotic test of endurance where the goal is simple: be the last one standing. While it often looks like a frantic scramble over the top rope, the format has mutated into complex multi-ring wars, weapon-filled brawls, and high-stakes gauntlets.

The standard battle royal is defined by a multi-competitor elimination format. In a typical one-ring match, wrestlers are removed from contention by crossing the top rope with both feet touching the floor. However, the 'rules' of the chaos vary wildly depending on the promotion. Some variations, like the 'Last Blood' match, focus on the first person to bleed, while 'Reverse Battle Royals' require competitors to fight from outside the ring to earn entry.

The 'Rumble' style, popularized by WWE's Royal Rumble, introduced timed intervals where participants enter one by one. This format was pioneered by former wrestler Pat Patterson. It has seen massive scale, including a 20-man match in 1988, a 40-man match in 2011, and a 50-man 'Greatest Royal Rumble' in 2018.

Other promotions have adapted this with unique twists: TNA's 'Call Your Shot Gauntlet' ends in a singles match for a championship of the winner's choosing, and AEW's 'Casino Battle Royale' groups entrants by card suits, with the 'Joker' entering last. Extreme variations push the boundaries of the sport. The NWA's 'Bunkhouse Stampede' encouraged weapons and 'bunkhouse gear' like cowboy boots. The 'World War 3' match in 1995 featured 60 competitors across three rings, eventually funneling everyone into a center ring. Even the 'Dynamite Dozen' in AEW features a rotating prize system, where the winner of a 12-man match might have to face a reigning ring holder from the previous year to claim the ultimate prize.
