The cricketer who mastered 50 different varieties of slower balls
In short: Benny Howell didn't just learn to bowl; he engineered a repertoire of deception by studying baseball pitchers. This obsessive technicality, combined with a unique neurological perspective on focus, transformed him into one of the most versatile all-rounders in modern cricket.
Howell's technical evolution is rooted in unconventional observation. He claims to possess 50 different varieties of slower balls, a feat he achieved by studying the mechanics of baseball pitchers. To refine these skills, he practices in his own back garden with his dog, seeking the precise nuances of deception that define his bowling style.
His career trajectory highlights a journey of seeking the right fit. After debuting for Hampshire in 2010, he moved to Gloucestershire in 2012 following a standout trial period. His impact was immediate: he became a pivotal all-rounder, eventually becoming the first player for Gloucestershire to achieve a double-wicket maiden in a T20 match—a feat he accomplished against his former club, Hampshire.
Beyond the pitch, Howell's performance is shaped by his personal history with ADHD. He describes his school years as being the 'weird kid' who struggled with noise and boundaries, finding sport as a vital escape. This background provides a lens into his intense focus, which has translated into high-pressure success, including a 2015 Royal London One Day Cup victory and a standout 2019 campaign in the Bangladesh Premier League where he faced legends like Shahid Afridi.
His versatility has made him a global commodity. From the inaugural season of The Hundred with Birmingham Phoenix to the Indian Premier League with the Punjab Kings, Howell's ability to adapt to different conditions—from the slow wickets of Bangladesh to the high-octane atmosphere of the PSL—marks him as a master of the modern game's diverse demands.
