Why NFL teammates nicknamed a reliable running back The Law Firm
In short: BenJarvus Green-Ellis was a standout running back known for his remarkable ball security. During his time with the New England Patriots, he famously never fumbled the ball. His unique, multi-part name earned him the enduring nickname The Law Firm, a moniker that became a staple of his professional identity.
Born in New Orleans in 1985, BenJarvus Jeremy Green-Ellis began his football journey at St. Augustine High School. After a productive stint at Indiana University, he transferred to Ole Miss, where he became only the second player in school history to record consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Despite his collegiate success, he entered the NFL in 2008 as an undrafted free agent, eventually signing with the New England Patriots.
His professional career was defined by consistency and reliability. During his tenure in New England, Green-Ellis maintained a perfect record of zero fumbles, a feat that drew national attention. By 2010, he had established himself as a primary offensive weapon, becoming the first Patriots running back since 2004 to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. His performance in 2011 helped lead the team to Super Bowl XLVI, where he started against the New York Giants.
In 2012, Green-Ellis signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. It was here that his legendary streak finally ended; on September 23, he recorded his first career fumble after 589 touches. While his role eventually diminished following the arrival of rookie Giovani Bernard, Green-Ellis remained a productive back, finishing his career with a reputation for durability and professional discipline. His nickname, bestowed by teammates and popularized by broadcasters Al Michaels and John Madden, remains a testament to the distinctive nature of his name and his steady presence on the field.
