In short: In 1985, a devastating knee injury seemed to end Bernard King's career. Most players never recovered their form after such trauma, yet King fought his way back to elite scoring, proving that even the most catastrophic physical setbacks cannot extinguish a legendary competitive drive.

Bernard King was a prolific scoring machine in the NBA, characterized by an explosive style and a quick release. During the 1984–85 season, he reached the pinnacle of offensive dominance, leading the league with an average of 32.9 points per game. His ability to score was so profound that basketball legend Julius Erving once described King as the toughest player he had ever faced.

However, his trajectory was violently interrupted on March 23, 1985. While attempting to block a dunk by Reggie Theus, King suffered a catastrophic injury to his right leg, involving a torn ACL, a torn meniscus, and a lateral condyle fracture of the femur. The injury was so severe that it required major reconstruction, and King was forced to miss the entire 1985–86 season. At the time, no NBA player had successfully returned to their previous level of play following such a traumatic injury.

King's comeback was a testament to his discipline. After rehabilitating away from the media spotlight, he returned to the court, eventually joining the Washington Bullets. During the 1987–88 season, he helped lead the team to the playoffs. Even in his mid-30s, King remained a threat, averaging 28.4 points per game in 1991 and scoring 52 points against the Denver Nuggets on December 29 of that year. Despite facing major private difficulties alongside his great skill, his legacy was cemented by his September 8, 2013, induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Despite his on-court brilliance, King's life was complicated by various legal issues and personal battles, including alcohol addiction in the late 1970s. These challenges, alongside his physical recovery, form a complex portrait of an athlete who achieved greatness through sheer force of will.
