The specialized military force tasked with guarding the Iron Curtain
In short: Discover the specific role of the Grenztruppen, the dedicated border troops responsible for maintaining the physical and ideological barriers of the Eastern Bloc.
The Grenztruppen were a specialized branch of the East German Army specifically organized to secure the inner borders. Their primary mandate was to protect the boundaries with Western Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, as well as the perimeter surrounding West Berlin.
By maintaining these zones, the troops served as the physical enforcement mechanism for the division of Europe during the Cold War era.
