The Spanish Governor Who Secretly Armed the American Revolution from the Mississippi River
In short: Bernardo de Gálvez was not just a colonial administrator; he was a pivotal military strategist whose campaigns against British forces in the Gulf Coast provided a vital lifeline to the American Revolution. By securing the Mississippi River, he forced the British to defend a second, exhausting front in North America.
Born in 1746 into a family of military leaders, Bernardo de Gálvez began his service at age 16. After gaining experience in campaigns across Europe and North Africa, he was appointed governor of Louisiana in 1777. His tenure was marked by a shrewd ability to stabilize the colony through trade and local alliances, most notably by marrying into a prominent French Creole family to secure the loyalty of his subjects.
When Spain officially declared war on Great Britain in 1779, Gálvez acted decisively to protect New Orleans. Despite losing most of his fleet to a hurricane, he mobilized a diverse force of Spanish regulars, local settlers, free Blacks, enslaved people, and Choctaw allies. He systematically captured British strongholds at Natchez, Baton Rouge, and Bayou Manchac. His most daring feat occurred in 1781 at Pensacola, where he personally led his ships into the bay under heavy fire, eventually forcing the British to surrender after a two-month siege.
Beyond his battlefield successes, Gálvez was the architect of a critical supply chain. Working with American agent Oliver Pollock, he funneled essential arms, ammunition, and medicine up the Mississippi River to support George Rogers Clark and the broader American cause. His efforts effectively neutralized British naval dominance in the Gulf. Though he later became viceroy of New Spain and died in 1786, his legacy was formally recognized by the United States in 2014 when he was posthumously granted honorary citizenship.
