How a single expansion changed the landscape of Big Ten football forever

In short: For decades, the Big Ten was locked out of hosting its own championship game. Despite having elite talent, NCAA rules required a 12-team membership with two divisions—a threshold the conference couldn't hit until a pivotal move in 2010 changed everything.

Before 2011, the Big Ten determined its champion through regular season play alone. While the conference expanded to 11 schools in 1990 by adding Penn State, it remained unable to host a championship game because NCAA requirements mandated 12 teams divided into two distinct divisions. This changed in 2010 when the conference added the University of Nebraska, finally meeting the membership threshold.

The inaugural championship game was held in 2011 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. This venue has remained the primary site for the event, with a hosting agreement currently extending through 2028. The league's broadcast strategy was equally ambitious; in 2010, a media agreement with Fox Sports was secured for the 2011–2016 seasons, with values estimated between $20 million and $25 million per season.

The structure of the game has evolved alongside the conference's footprint. Originally, the game featured the first-place teams from the 'Leaders' and 'Legends' divisions. However, following the 2014 entry of Maryland and Rutgers, the conference shifted to geographic divisions. By 2024, the conference underwent a massive expansion to 18 teams with the arrival of Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington, leading to the elimination of divisions entirely. Now, the championship simply matches the top two teams in the conference standings.

Success in the game has been dominated by a few programs. Through the 2024 season, Wisconsin and Ohio State have recorded the most appearances with six each, though Ohio State holds the edge in victories with five wins.
