In short: Before Microsoft changed the world, Bill Gates Sr. was shaping the legal and civic landscape of the Pacific Northwest. From assisting in the acquisition of Starbucks to leading major bar associations, his influence extended far beyond his famous son's technological revolution.

William Henry Gates II, known as Bill Gates Sr., was a prominent American attorney and civic leader whose career was deeply intertwined with the growth of Washington state. After serving in the US Army for approximately two years during World War II, he utilized the G.I. Bill to study at the University of Washington, earning his B.A. in 1949 and a J.D. in 1950. His legal expertise focused on corporate and technology disputes, leading him to co-found the law firm Shidler McBroom & Gates in 1964.

His business acumen was evidenced by his role in 1987, when he assisted Howard Schultz in the acquisition of the Starbucks coffee chain. Outside of legal proceedings, Gates supported local organisations, acting as president for the Seattle/King County Bar Association (1969–1970) and the Washington State Bar Association (1986–1987). He also held a directorship at Costco Wholesale starting in 2003 and served on the Board of Regents at the University of Washington for fifteen years, from 1997 to 2012.

Gates was also a vocal advocate for social equity and economic policy. He co-authored the book 'Wealth and Our Commonwealth,' which defended estate tax policies, and founded the Technology Alliance in 1995 to expand tech-based employment. Despite his philanthropic role as a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-chair, his influence remained linked to the region he assisted in building. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 94, following a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
