In short: In the bottom of the ninth, a forgotten lead-off hitter stepped to the plate at Forbes Field. What followed was a dramatic ninth-inning drive that secured a championship and etched Bill Mazeroski into baseball immortality, marking the first time a major league season ended on a walk-off home run.

Bill Mazeroski, nicknamed "the Glove," spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1956 to 1972. While he was a ten-time All-Star and an eight-time Gold Glove winner, he is most defined by a single moment: Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. Facing the favored New York Yankees, Mazeroski hit a high fastball from reliever Ralph Terry to left-center field, clinching a championship victory for Pittsburgh. This remains the only time in history that a walk-off home run has secured a World Series title in a Game 7.

Defensively, Mazeroski was a titan. He set a major league record for second basemen with 1,706 career double plays, a mark that stood until 2009. His ability to turn the pivot was so exceptional that Pirates manager Branch Rickey moved him from shortstop to second base after observing his skill in the minors. He also led the major leagues in assists nine times and led the National League in double plays for eight consecutive years.

Despite his defensive reputation, Mazeroski provided rare offensive power for a second baseman. Between 1944 and 1974, his 138 career home runs and 853 RBIs were the highest for any player at his position. His ability to drive the ball was particularly impressive given that the Pirates played in a cavernous home stadium that was notoriously difficult for hitters until the mid-1960s. In 2001, his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame occurred.

Mazeroski's journey was shaped by a difficult upbringing in a one-room house without electricity or plumbing. His father, Louis, a former baseball prospect whose career was ended by a coal mine accident, purchased Bill's first glove with money earned from digging out an outhouse. This grit translated to the field, where Mazeroski became one of the most decorated infielders in the history of the game.
