How a Las Vegas Catholic school became a national powerhouse for high school sports
In short: Founded in 1954, Bishop Gorman High School has evolved from a local private institution into a nationally recognized athletic juggernaut. While its academic roots remain in the Roman Catholic tradition, the school is perhaps most famous today for its elite football program and its record-breaking success on the national stage.
Established by the Archdiocese of Las Vegas, the school was named in honor of Thomas Kiely Gorman, the inaugural Catholic Bishop of the Reno-Las Vegas Diocese. Originally situated near the city center on Maryland Parkway, the institution underwent a massive transformation in 2007 when it relocated to a sprawling 36-acre campus in Summerlin. This modern facility, spanning 187,000 square feet, required a $96 million investment to construct, later supplemented by an $18 million donation for a dedicated athletic center.
The school's athletic identity, centered on the Gael mascot, gained significant momentum in the early 21st century. In 2008, the baseball team achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Nevada high school to secure an American Legion World Series title. Shortly thereafter, the football program began its ascent to national prominence. Under the leadership of coach Tony Sanchez, who arrived in 2009, the team achieved remarkable consistency, including back-to-back national championships in 2014 and 2015. By the 2012 season, the Gaels were regularly appearing on national television networks like ESPN and Fox.
Beyond football, the school maintains a rigorous approach to athletics, employing specialized coaching staff such as world-champion grappler Ricky Lundell to lead the wrestling program. The school's performance metrics are frequently cited by major sports media outlets, which often rank the Gaels among the premier high school programs in the United States. This success has cemented the school's reputation as a destination for top-tier student-athletes, bridging the gap between traditional private education and high-stakes competitive sports culture.
