How a kabaddi player's life became a cinematic symbol of defiance
In short: In 2025, the Tamil film Bison Kaalamaadan hit screens, transforming the real-life struggles of kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan into a gripping sports drama. It explores how an athlete overcomes systemic caste-based discrimination and village rivalries to reach the highest levels of international competition.
Directed by Mari Selvaraj, the film follows Kittan Velusamy, a man from a socially oppressed caste in rural Tamil Nadu. Set against the backdrop of 1994's caste-based violence and intense district rivalries, the narrative tracks Kittan's journey as he battles prejudice and powerful landlords to represent India at the 1994 Asian Games. His resilience earns him the nickname 'Bison,' turning his personal struggle into a symbol of hope. The protagonist's mentor, Kandeeban, helps him channel his intense anger into purpose on the court. This transformation allows him to rise above brutal hierarchies and familial resistance.
The production was a significant undertaking for lead actor Dhruv Vikram, who viewed the role as his first true feature film debut in an original character. To prepare for the physical demands of the role, Vikram underwent specialized sports training starting in late August 2021. Co-star Anupama Parameswaran also underwent a rigorous two-month workshop, interacting with local residents to ensure authenticity in her portrayal. The technical crew includes cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K and editor Sakthi Thiru. Music for the film was composed by Nivas K. Prasanna.
Released on 17 October 2025 to coincide with Diwali, the film was a major commercial success. While critics offered varying perspectives—with some noting it was not Selvaraj's finest work and others praising its political sharpness—it resonated deeply with audiences. In India, the film opened to ₹2.30 crore and eventually reached an estimated theatrical run of ₹75 crore. The film's success highlights the power of sports cinema to address complex social hierarchies and systemic oppression. Following its theatrical run, the movie was made available for streaming on Netflix. It was distributed in Malaysia by Veedu Production.
