The NBA star who walked away from millions, only to vanish at sea
In short: In 1999, Bison Dele abruptly retired from the NBA, leaving behind a US$36.45 million contract. He had conquered the court, but his life would end in a maritime mystery involving identity theft, a catamaran, and a tragic family betrayal.
Brian Carson Williams, known professionally as Bison Dele, was a formidable presence in the NBA. After being selected 10th overall in the 1991 draft by the Orlando Magic, he moved through several teams, including the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers. A key highlight of his career was winning a championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1997. Despite his success, Dele famously walked away from the Detroit Pistons at age 30, abandoning five years and over $36 million in guaranteed salary to pursue a life of adventure travel and sailing.
The mystery began in July 2002, when Dele sailed from Tahiti on his catamaran, the Hukuna Matata, accompanied by his girlfriend Serena Karlan, skipper Bertrand Saldo, and his older brother, Miles Dabord. After the last satellite phone call on July 8, the group vanished. When Dabord eventually brought the boat into Tahiti alone on July 20, the vessel showed signs of repair where bullet holes had been patched. Investigations later revealed that Dabord had been using Dele's identity to open mailboxes and purchase $152,000 worth of gold.
The tragedy concluded with a grim investigation by the FBI and French authorities. Evidence suggested Dabord murdered Dele, Karlman, and Saldo, using weights to sink their bodies in the Pacific. While Dabord claimed the deaths were accidental or defensive, investigators found his account inconsistent with the forensic evidence. Following a police sting in Phoenix, Dabord died in a California hospital in September 2002 after intentionally overdosing on insulin, leaving the true fate of the victims' remains a permanent mystery.
