In short: The G45 BMW X3 marks a significant shift in the luxury crossover segment. By moving away from a shared electric platform and introducing a China-exclusive long-wheelbase variant, BMW has reconfigured its manufacturing footprint. This latest iteration blends advanced digital integration with a refined design inspired by the Neue Klasse concept.

Unveiled on 19 June 2024, the G45 X3 represents the fourth generation of BMW's popular luxury crossover. While it retains the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform used by its predecessor, the G45 departs from previous strategies by excluding a dedicated electric variant on this chassis; instead, the electric iX3 will utilize the distinct Neue Klasse platform. This strategic split allows BMW to tailor the G45 specifically for internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, including the 30e plug-in hybrid, which now features a 19.7 kWh battery providing up to 90 km of electric range under the WLTP cycle.

Manufacturing of the G45 is split between the U.S. and South Africa. Plant Spartanburg handles several core models, while Plant Rosslyn in South Africa has taken on a more significant role, serving as the sole global production site for the plug-in hybrid and the 40d xDrive variants. For the first time, the X3 series also includes a long-wheelbase model, the G48, which launched in China in February 2025. With a wheelbase extended by 110 mm to 2,975 mm, this version is produced at Plant Lydia in Shenyang through a joint venture with Brilliance Automotive, positioning it as the largest model in its segment.

The interior experience has been overhauled with the BMW Curved Display, housing a 14.9-inch iDrive 9 infotainment system powered by an Android-based software stack. Notably, this is the first BMW to combine the iDrive 9 interface with a traditional rotary control knob. Design-wise, the vehicle adopts a sportier silhouette with a lowered roofline and a prominent kidney grille, which can be specified with optional Iconic Glow contour lighting. Performance enthusiasts will note that the traditional M high-performance model has been discontinued for this generation, with the M50 serving as the new performance flagship, featuring an adaptive M Sport suspension and a quad exhaust system.
