How a platform shift redefined the BMW X1's DNA
In short: The second-generation BMW X1 (F48) represented a radical departure from its predecessor. By abandoning rear-wheel drive for a modular front-wheel-drive platform shared with MINI, BMW fundamentally altered the vehicle's dimensions, interior space, and driving mechanics to target a new era of subcompact luxury.
Unveiled at the September 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the F48 generation marked a significant engineering pivot. While the previous generation utilized a rear-wheel-drive 3 Series Touring platform, the F48 transitioned to the modular UKL2 front-wheel-drive-based platform, a move also shared with MINI models. This shift brought notable physical changes: the F48 features a wheelbase that is 90 mm shorter than the original, yet it is 23 mm wider and 67 mm taller. Despite the shorter wheelbase, the new platform architecture successfully increased interior legroom, headroom, and shoulder room.
The model range expanded significantly through regional tailoring and electrification. In 2016, BMW introduced a long-wheelbase version for the Chinese market (F49) at the Beijing Auto Show, featuring a wheelbase that is 110 mm longer. This variant also introduced the xDrive25Le, an all-wheel-drive hybrid. BMW grew its hybrid range in September 2019 by introducing the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid, featuring a 94 hp electric motor, a 9.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, and a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 220 hp combined.
Technological and aesthetic updates arrived in stages. A facelifted LCI model was revealed in May 2019, introducing LED headlights and bumpers, as well as a larger kidney grille. The infotainment experience also evolved; while earlier models used the iDrive 4 system, all F48 X1s were equipped with the iDrive 6 operating system from 2018 onwards. This update brought touchscreen capabilities to the 8.8-inch Navigation Plus displays, whereas the 6.5-inch displays remained non-touchscreen with a raised matte grey bezel.
