How three gearsets can power eight speeds in a compact transmission

In short: Most automatic transmissions grow larger and more complex as they add more gears. Aisin and Toyota flipped this logic. By using a globally patented gearset concept that combines parallel and serial power flows, they created an 8-speed system that is actually more compact than many 6-speed predecessors.

The Aisin-Toyota 8-speed automatic transmission broke the traditional engineering trade-off between gear count and size. While competitors often added physical components to increase ratios, Aisin utilized computer-aided design to move from a purely serial power flow to a combined parallel and serial concept. This allowed them to achieve 8 speeds using only three gearsets. This architectural efficiency made the unit compact enough to fit into both longitudinal and transverse engine layouts, a feat that was previously difficult for 8-speed systems.

The engineering also prioritized weight and rigidity. For example, the aluminum die-cast case of the new transmission is 10% lighter and 30% more rigid than the previous 6-speed unit used in the Lexus LS 430, despite handling a 22% greater torque capacity. To further refine performance, the company used micro-laser technology to reduce gear tooth production tolerances by 50% and replaced steel on gear tooth surfaces with aluminum. These advancements contributed to shift times as fast as 0.35 seconds, which was 41% faster than the older 6-speed model.

However, the pursuit of high-density engineering has not been without controversy. The UA 80E/F series, developed as a joint venture between Toyota and Aisin AW, has faced significant scrutiny. Starting in 2017, several models—including the Highlander and Sienna—reported issues like harsh shifting, whining, and unintended acceleration. Investigations, including a 2024 report by Gears Magazine, identified specific mechanical vulnerabilities such as a nut that can loosen to allow transfer gear movement, as well as fluid contamination from torque converter clutch debris.
