How a rookie manager led the Diamondbacks to a historic 2001 World Series victory
In short: Bob Brenly transitioned from a journeyman catcher to a championship-winning manager in just one season. After taking the helm of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, he navigated a grueling seven-game World Series against the New York Yankees, securing the franchise's first title and cementing his place in baseball history.
Born in Coshocton, Ohio, in 1954, Bob Brenly carved out a nine-year playing career in Major League Baseball, primarily as a catcher for the San Francisco Giants. Though he was a reliable defensive player—notably leading National League catchers in fielding percentage in 1986—his playing days were marked by both peculiar highlights and struggles. He once committed four errors in a single inning while playing third base, only to redeem himself by hitting a walk-off home run in the same game.
Brenly’s managerial career began in 2001 when he was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Replacing Buck Showalter, Brenly was selected for his attitude and baseball knowledge. He inherited a roster featuring stars like Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. In his debut season, he led the team to 92 wins and a World Series appearance against the New York Yankees, who were seeking their fourth consecutive championship.
The 2001 World Series was a test of endurance and tactical decision-making. Brenly’s management was heavily scrutinized, particularly his use of closer Byung-hyun Kim, who surrendered game-tying home runs in consecutive contests. Despite these setbacks and the pressure of facing the Yankees, Brenly’s strategic reliance on his aces, Johnson and Schilling, proved decisive. The Diamondbacks ultimately clinched the title in Game 7, making Brenly the first rookie manager to win the World Series since 1961.
Following his championship success, Brenly managed the Diamondbacks until his dismissal in 2004. He subsequently returned to the broadcast booth, a role he had held previously with Fox and the Chicago Cubs. Throughout his post-playing career, Brenly has remained a fixture in baseball media, serving as a color commentator for the Diamondbacks and continuing to influence the game from the booth.
