Beyond the clichés: why Bob Chesney’s 'family' philosophy is more than just a slogan
In short: In college football, the word 'family' is often dismissed as a hollow marketing tactic. But for UCLA's new head coach, Bob Chesney, it is a lived reality that extends from his own children to the very structure of his coaching staff and the charities he supports.
For many, the concept of a 'sports family' is a predictable trope used to mask the cutthroat nature of elite athletics. However, Chesney has built a culture where the distinction between workplace and home is intentionally blurred. At the UCLA Wasserman Football Center, he encourages coaches to bring their families, ensuring that the voices of children are a constant presence in the halls rather than being excluded from a 'rough-and-tumble' environment.
This commitment to personal connection was first evident years before his UCLA appointment. While serving as an assistant, Chesney responded to a networking letter from offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy. Rather than a standard professional reply, Chesney had researched Kennedy’s background and made a donation to a nonprofit established by Kennedy's parents to assist homeless families in Boston. This gesture established a foundation of trust that has lasted through their tenures at Holy Cross and James Madison University.
Chesney’s leadership is backed by a formidable track record of program transformations. Since becoming a head coach at Division III Salve Regina, he has amassed a record of 132–51 over 16 seasons. His ability to rebuild programs is a recurring theme: he turned around Salve Regina after eight consecutive losing seasons and transformed Assumption University, leading them to five straight winning records. His recent success at James Madison University, including a 12–2 record and a College Football Playoff berth, ultimately paved his way to the Bruins' sideline in late 2025.
