In short: Before the era of global superstars, one wrestler defined an era of dominance. Bob Backlund didn't just win championships; he held the WWWF title for a staggering 2,135 days, a reign that remains the second longest in the company's history.

Bob Backlund's ascent to professional wrestling royalty began long before the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. An exceptional non-professional competitor, Backlund achieved All-American status in wrestling and football whilst attending Waldorf College, subsequently securing the 1971 NCAA Division II title at 190 pounds. After training under Eddie Sharkey in 1973, he navigated the complex landscape of territorial wrestling, winning titles in the NWA Missouri and Western States promotions.

His legendary run in the World Wide Wrestling Federation began in earnest in 1976. On February 20, 1978, Backlund achieved a career-defining victory at Madison Square Garden, defeating Superstar Billy Graham to capture the WWWF Heavyweight Championship. This victory launched a period of unprecedented stability in the championship, as he successfully defended the belt against icons like Harley Race, Ric Flair, and Antonio Inkuat. His reign was so enduring that it spanned from 1978 until his loss to the Iron Sheik in 1983.

However, Backlund's career was marked by dramatic shifts in persona and fortune. While initially a beloved hero, his later years in the 1980s saw him adopt a more eccentric, 'Howdy Doody' style character that struggled to resonate with evolving audiences. He even faced the sting of being voted the Wrestling Observer Newsletter's 'Most Overrated Wrestler' in 1983. Despite these fluctuations, his resilience was evident during his 1992 return, where he famously lasted over an hour in the 1993 Royal Rumble, setting a longevity record that stood for over a decade.
