The 7-foot-3 heir to a basketball dynasty forged in displacement
In short: Born in Khartoum and raised in the shadow of a civil war, Bol Bol carries more than just his father's towering 7-foot-3 frame. From being a refugee in Connecticut to a highly touted NBA prospect, his journey is a testament to resilience and the complex legacy of the Bol name.
Bol Bol’s life began amidst the turbulence of the Second Sudanese Civil War. In 1998, following an American missile strike, his father, former NBA star Manute Bol, was accused of being an American spy, leading the Sudanese government to bar him from fleeing to the United States. The family's path to safety was fraught with delays; in 2001, they were stranded for months in Cairo, Egypt, due to visa complications despite having tickets secured by American friends.
The family eventually arrived in Connecticut in 2002, when Bol was just two years old, entering the U.S. as designated political refugees. Settling in Olathe, Kansas, by age seven, Bol began playing basketball at the encouragement of his father, despite an initial reluctance. His physical development was rapid; by age 14, he already stood 6 feet 10 inches tall.
His basketball trajectory was marked by both immense promise and significant volatility. A consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2018, Bol was projected as a top-three pick in the 2019 NBA draft before a foot injury during his freshman year at Oregon altered his draft stock. He ultimately fell to the 44th pick, selected by the Miami Heat and immediately traded to the Denver Nuggets. His professional career has since spanned the NBA and the Philippine Basketball Association, where he recorded a 53-point game for the TNT Tropang 5G in May 2026.
