From a troubled youth to an NFL cornerstone
In short: Before he was a first-round NFL draft pick, Garett Bolles faced expulsion from his home and a criminal suspension. His journey from a high school vandal to a multi-million dollar professional athlete is a remarkable story of personal reconstruction and community service.
The trajectory of Garett Bolles' life was marked by significant early instability. Born in Walnut Creek, California, in 1992, Bolles moved to Utah, where his youth was characterized by hardship, including being removed from his father's home. During his time at Westlake High School, he was even arrested and suspended for three games following a period of extensive vandalism at a rival high school's football field.
A pivotal shift occurred when Bolles re-engaged with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This period of personal reconstruction included serving an LDS mission in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before he began his football career at Snow College. His athletic ascent was rapid; by 2016, he was the top junior college prospect, eventually transferring to the University of Utah where he earned All-Pac-12 honors.
Bolles entered the NFL in 2017 as the 20th overall pick for the Denver Broncos. While his early professional years included public criticism from general manager John Elway regarding frequent holding penalties, he eventually secured massive contract extensions, including an $82 million deal in late 2024. His career has been defined by both physical resilience—recovering from a broken leg in 2022—and a commitment to philanthropy.
Today, Bolles uses his platform to mentor juveniles in the justice system and support children with learning disabilities through his GB3 Foundation. Following his son's diagnosis with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), he even co-founded a specialized training center in 2025 to assist educators and pathologists in treating the disorder.
