How a 1927 Australian tour gave a Czech football club its kangaroo identity
In short: When Australian officials sought a European club for a football tour in 1927, they were rejected by Prague's giants. The underdog choice, AFK Vršovice, didn't just accept the invitation—they gained a mascot, a new name, and two live kangaroos.
The club's current identity as Bohemians 1905 is rooted in a moment of diplomatic footballing maneuvering. In 1927, Australian officials were searching for a European partner for a tour. After the prestigious Slavia Prague and Viktoria Žižkov declined the offer, the club then known as AFK Vršovice stepped in. To ensure the Australians could pronounce their name, the team rebranded as 'Bohemians,' a nod to their Czech nationality.
The tour left a permanent mark on the club's iconography. As a gift, the team received two live kangaroos, which were eventually donated to the Prague Zoo. This legacy persists today through the club's stylized kangaroo emblem and the affectionate nickname 'Klokani' (Kangaroos).
Beyond its branding, the club's history is defined by resilience and a distinct countercultural spirit. While the 1982–83 season remains their only Czechoslovak First League championship, the club has faced existential threats. In 2005, financial insolvency and mismanagement led to the club being relegated to the third division and its recent results being expunged. However, a loyal, left-liberal fanbase stepped in to pay off debts and keep the club afloat.
Today, Bohemians 1905 maintains a unique atmosphere at their Ďolíček stadium. Unlike many rivals associated with nationalism, the Bohemians supporter culture is rooted in progressive, anti-fascist values, often drawing from punk, ska, and reggae subcultures. This community-driven model has seen fans move from mere spectators to holding a minority share in the club's ownership.
