The Bulgarian football club that survived political mergers and financial collapse
In short: Founded by twenty-two students in 1912, Botev Plovdiv is Bulgaria's oldest active football club. Despite facing forced name changes, administrative relegation, and a descent into the third division, this historic institution has repeatedly reclaimed its place among the nation's footballing elite.
The club's identity has been a battleground of political shifts. Originally founded as Hristo Botyov - Football Association, the club's name was altered several times for political reasons, even being merged with rivals Spartak and Akademik in 1967 to create 'Trakia'. It wasn't until 1989 that the club finally restored its authentic name, Botev. The club's initial management board was led by chairman Stoyan Puhtev, with Nenko Penelov and Petar Delev also serving in key roles.
Botev's history is marked by moments of immense European glory and profound domestic struggle. In the 1980s, the club achieved legendary feats, including a 2–0 victory over German giants Bayern Munich in 1984 and a 1–0 win over Barcelona in 1981. However, the post-communist era brought instability; financial difficulties led to an administrative relegation in 2010, forcing the club to rebuild from the amateur V Group. The club's golden era was defined by Dinko Dermendzhiev, who holds the record for most appearances and goals for the team. This period also saw Georgi Slavkov win the European Golden Shoe in 1981 after scoring 31 goals.
The club's visual identity remains deeply rooted in its origins. The yellow and black kit, adopted in 1917, symbolizes the golden grain fields of Thrace and the fertile black earth, alongside the religious heritage of its founders. Today, the club continues to compete in the Parva Liga, maintaining its status as one of Bulgaria's most historically significant and supported clubs. The current crest features a red circle and a yellow and black striped shield, incorporating the colors of the Bulgarian tricolour.
