In short: From an army officers' club to a European powerhouse, the history of CSKA Sofia is a saga of political decrees, sudden rebrandings, and legendary upsets. Discover how a club born from wartime mergers rose to challenge the giants of Europe.

The foundations of CSKA Sofia lie in the early 20th century, rooted in a 1923 officers' club. The club's lineage is a complex web of mergers, including the 1923 formation of AS-23 from three Sofia-based teams, and the 1944 unification of AS-23, Shipka, and Spartak into Chavdar Sofia. The modern entity officially traces its start to May 5, 1948, when CDV merged with Septemvri Sofia to form Septemvri pri CDV.

The club's identity has been frequently reshaped by political authorities. In 1950, the name was expanded to include 'Peoples' (C.D.N.V.), and by 1953, it was renamed Team of the Sofia Garrison. Perhaps most dramatic was the 1985 decree by the Bulgarian Communist Party, which disbanded both CSKA and rivals Levski Sofia following a violent cup final, forcing the club to compete as Sredets for a period.

Despite these instabilities, CSKA achieved unprecedented success, including a record nine consecutive domestic titles between 1954 and 1962. On the international stage, they became a feared opponent, famously defeating reigning champions Ajax in 1973–74 and Nottingham Forest in 1980–81. Their deepest European run occurred in the 1980–81 European Cup, where they reached the semi-finals after a legendary 3–0 lead against Bayern Munich was overturned in a 4–3 loss.

The club's legacy is also defined by individual greatness, such as Petar Zhekov, Bulgaria's all-time leading scorer, and Hristo Stoichkov, whose talent was scouted by Johan Cruyff during a semi-final run against Barcelona in 1989.
