In short: He once told an opposing coach, 'It’s been a pleasure kicking your ass.' Now, Bret Bielema navigates the high-stakes world of college football, moving from record-breaking dominance at Wisconsin to the intense pressures of the SEC and his current rebuild at Illinois.

Bret Bielema’s coaching trajectory is defined by extreme peaks and valleys. His arrival at Wisconsin in 2006 set a historic standard; he became the first coach in Big Ten history to secure ten wins in a debut season, finishing with a 12–1 record and earning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. During this era, he led the Badgers to three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances and a Big Ten Championship victory over Nebraska in 2012.

However, his move to Arkansas in 2013 brought significant turbulence. While he achieved a notable feat by leading an unranked Razorbacks squad to shut out two consecutive ranked opponents, his tenure was marked by regression, including a winless SEC season in 2015. At the time, he was the highest-paid state employee in Arkansas, earning $4,200,000, before being dismissed following a 48–45 loss to Missouri in 2017.

After stints in the NFL with the New England Patriots and New York Giants, Bielema returned to the college ranks to lead the University of Illinois in 2021. His tenure has been a rollercoaster of momentum, including a historic 2021 game against Penn State that set an FBS record for the most overtime periods in a single contest. As of 2025, he remains a central figure in the Big Ten, commanding a new contract that sees his annual salary rising to $7.7 million.
