In short: Brett Gurewitz didn't just play punk; he built the infrastructure that defined it. From a $3,000 loan to launch his first album to owning one of indie music's most influential labels, his career is a masterclass in balancing artistic integrity with industrial scale.

Born in Woodland Hills and raised in a Jewish household, Gurewitz co-founded Bad Religion in 1980 at just 18 years old. The band’s early trajectory was volatile: they released two albums and an EP before Gurewitz departed in 1983. He returned three years later to record five more records before the group signed with Atlantic Records in 1993. This era saw the band transition from underground favorites to Billboard-charting acts, notably with the 1994 release of Stranger Than Fiction. The turning point for Gurewitz's career was his role as owner of Epitaph Records. As the label grew—propelled by the massive success of bands like The Offspring in the mid-1990s—Gurewitz made the strategic decision to leave Bad Religion in 1994 to run the company full-time.

This move shifted his focus from performance to production and curation, leading him to produce for heavyweights like NOFX and Rancid while also co-founding Black Mask Studios. Gurewitz’s journey was not linear; it included a period of drug addiction in the mid-90s that led to a hiatus from the band. After completing rehabilitation in 1999, he rejoined Bad Religion for a second tenure, contributing to six studio albums between 2000 and 2013. Today, his role is primarily as a songwriter and producer; due to his heavy commitments at Epitaph, he rarely performs live, appearing only occasionally near his Los Angeles home.

In 1982, Bad Religion debuted their first full-length record, How Could Hell Be Any Worse? (1982), serves as a pivotal historical marker. Financed by a $3,000 loan from Gurewitz's father, the record sold 10,000 copies in less than a year, providing the initial momentum for the Southern California punk sound that would eventually be popularized by his own label.
