In short: Born in Uruguay and raised in New Jersey, Gabe Saporta transitioned from the gritty punk scene to the global pop charts. After leading the bands Midtown and Cobra Starship, he pivoted toward talent management and artist advocacy, proving that a musician’s influence can extend far beyond the stage.

Born in Montevideo in 1979 to a Jewish family, Gabe Saporta moved to New York City at age four before settling in New Jersey in 1991. His early exposure to the punk rock scene, including bands like Fugazi and Pavement, fueled his desire to create his own music. By age 16, he was playing bass in his first band, Humble Beginnings, eventually forming the pop-punk group Midtown while attending Rutgers University, where he studied philosophy and political science.

Saporta’s career took a sharp turn toward business during Midtown’s legal struggles. Recognizing his own aptitude for management, he began representing the band Armor For Sleep, eventually merging his efforts with Crush Management. This strategic move paved the way for the launch of Cobra Starship in 2005. The band, which Saporta conceived during a trip to the Arizona desert, became a commercial powerhouse, scoring two double-platinum Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits and touring with major acts like Justin Bieber.

In 2015, Saporta announced a shift in focus, stepping away from performing to establish The Artist Group, a talent management firm designed to support emerging musicians. His commitment to the industry continues through his role on the Artist Advocacy Council for the funding platform beatBread. Beyond music, Saporta has diversified his interests into real estate, fashion, and hospitality, drawing inspiration from his father’s perseverance in re-training as a physician after emigrating from Uruguay in the early 1980s.

While his primary legacy remains his contribution to dance rock and pop, Saporta’s career reflects a deliberate evolution from artist to architect of other musicians' success. Whether through his work as a television presenter or his behind-the-scenes guidance, he has consistently sought to connect people through the medium of music, maintaining the same passion that first drew him to the industry as a teenager.
